What's in the Box

Choose the ZOLL AED 3 when the next patient could be a child or you look after several AEDs. One set of CPR Uni-padz III serves adults and children: for a child, the rescuer moves the pads and presses Child, and the shocks drop to child levels. For adults, a sensor in the pads measures each compression and the voice says when to push harder. It comes semi-automatic or fully automatic, and over Wi-Fi it reports its own self-tests. Its honest limits: the CPR coaching switches off in child mode, it runs on a ZOLL battery pack rather than store-bought batteries, at 5.5 lb it is heavier than the Philips FRx, and in the US it is sold only by prescription.

Who It Suits

Schools, youth sports, churches, camps and any place where a child could collapse and nobody should have to hunt for a second pads set. Also offices and campuses with several AEDs, where Wi-Fi status reports save a walk-around to check each one. If carrying weight matters most, the Philips FRx (3.5 lb) is lighter.

Adult CPR Coaching

ZOLL calls it Real CPR Help. A sensor in the pads sits under the rescuer's hands and reads how deep and how fast each compression is. If pushes stay shallower than 2 inches, the voice says "Push harder", then "Good compressions" once they are deep enough, while the color screen shows a depth bar and a CPR cycle timer. In child mode these depth prompts are off, because the right depth depends on the child's size.

Semi-Automatic or Fully Automatic

Both versions read the heart rhythm and only shock a rhythm that calls for it. The semi-automatic tells the rescuer to press the Shock button, and ZOLL puts the pause from the end of CPR to the shock at under 5 seconds. The fully automatic warns everyone to stand clear, counts down and shocks by itself, in under 8 seconds. The BLS version listed here is meant for professional responders.

One Pads Set for Adults and Children

For a child under 8 years old or under 55 lb (25 kg), the same CPR Uni-padz III are repositioned as the screen shows, and the Child button switches the AED to 50, 70 and 85 J, against 120, 150 and 200 J for adults, with a rhythm analysis written for children. There is no second set to buy, store or let expire.

Pads and Battery on One Schedule

The Uni-padz have a 5-year shelf life and come packed with a small rescue kit. The battery pack is sealed and non-rechargeable; ZOLL rates a new one at 5 years in the unit with weekly self-tests, 140 shocks at 200 J or 6 hours of monitoring. A weak Wi-Fi signal shortens that, and ZOLL says a spare should go in within 2 years of storage at room temperature. Over 5 years, plan on one pads set and one battery pack, plus fresh pads after any use.

Self-Tests, Wi-Fi and Event Records

It tests itself every 7 days by default, or daily if you set it to, and runs a full-energy 200 J test each month. With Wi-Fi turned on, it reports its ready status and any failed self-test to an AED program management system, which sends email alerts. Each rescue record, up to 120 minutes, keeps the heart rhythm, prompts and CPR data for your medical director, taken off by USB flash drive or over Wi-Fi.

AED 3 or AED Plus

Both coach adult CPR depth, both are IP55 and both come semi-automatic or fully automatic. The AED 3 is lighter (5.5 lb against 6.7 lb), uses one pads set for adults and children instead of separate Pedi-padz II, and adds a color touchscreen, Wi-Fi and a USB port. The ZOLL AED Plus runs on ten Duracell Coppertop CR123 batteries instead of a ZOLL pack and has a simpler display. Choose the AED Plus if you need neither Wi-Fi nor the single pads set.

Prescription, Training and Placement

In the US the AED 3 requires a prescription; contact us about it before you order. Register the AED with your local EMS so dispatchers know where it is. For practice, the AED 3 Trainer runs rescue prompts with no live shock. ZOLL rates the case IP55 (dust-protected and resistant to water jets) and drop-tests it from 1 m. It operates from 32°F to 122°F, so a cold vehicle or shed needs a heated spot; to mount it, see the wall bracket or a ZOLL wall cabinet.
