What's in the Box

Choose the ZOLL AED Plus when the people most likely to use it have little CPR practice. Its one-piece CPR-D-padz hold a sensor under the rescuer's hands, so the unit measures each compression and tells the rescuer to push harder instead of only keeping a beat. It comes in two versions: semi-automatic, where the rescuer presses the Shock button, and fully automatic, where it shocks by itself after a stand-clear warning. Its honest limits: at 6.7 lb it is about twice the weight of the Philips OnSite or FRx, children need a separate pads set, it has no Wi-Fi reporting, and in the US it is sold only by prescription.

Who It Suits

Front desks, gyms, churches, schools, small offices and anywhere the person who grabs the AED may not have practiced CPR lately. The coaching is the reason to choose it. If the AED will ride in a vehicle or hang where weight matters, a lighter unit such as the Philips FRx (3.5 lb) is easier to carry.

CPR Feedback You Can Hear and See

ZOLL calls it Real CPR Help. The sensor in the pads tracks how deep and how fast each compression is. The voice says "Push harder" until the compressions are deep enough, then "Good compressions," while a depth indicator on the display shows each push and the metronome keeps the rescuer at a steady pace.

Semi-Automatic or Fully Automatic

Both versions read the heart rhythm the same way and only shock a rhythm that calls for it. The semi-automatic tells the rescuer to press the Shock button. The fully automatic warns everyone to stand clear and then delivers the shock itself, which helps when a bystander might freeze. Pick the one your medical director and responders prefer.

Children Under 8

Connect Pedi-padz II and the AED Plus recognizes child pads and lowers its shocks to 50, 70 and 85 J, against 120, 150 and 200 J for adults. ZOLL lists them for children under 8 years old or under 55 lb (25 kg). They are a separate set, sold separately, so store them with the unit if children are likely to be around.

Pads and Batteries on One Schedule

The one-piece CPR-D-padz have a 5-year shelf life. Power comes from ten Duracell Coppertop CR123 lithium photo batteries made in the USA, sold as a set of 10. ZOLL says to use no other brand, because other batteries can make the unit charge much more slowly in an emergency. It rates a new set at 5 years of standby, about 225 shocks at 200 J or 13 hours of monitoring. Over 5 years, plan on one pads set and one battery set, plus fresh pads after any use.

Self-Tests and Where It Fits

It checks itself every week and runs a full-energy 200 J test each month. ZOLL rates the case IP55 (dust-protected and resistant to water jets). At 6.7 lb (3.1 kg) and 11.5 in deep it is about twice the weight of the Philips units and needs a roomy cabinet or a wall bracket. It operates from 32°F to 122°F, so a cold vehicle or shed needs a heated spot.

AED Plus or AED 3

Both give Real CPR Help and both are IP55. The ZOLL AED 3 adds a full-color screen, Wi-Fi to report its self-tests and one pads set for adults and children with a child mode, so there is no second set to stock. The AED Plus runs on ten Duracell Coppertop CR123 photo batteries instead of a battery pack and has a simpler display. Choose the AED 3 if remote status reports or a single pads set matter to you.

Prescription, Training and Records

In the US the AED Plus requires a prescription; contact us about it before you order. Register the AED with your local EMS so dispatchers know where it is. For practice, the AED Plus Trainer 2 runs rescue prompts with no live shock. After a use, the event record can be downloaded through the infrared (IrDA) port with ZOLL software for your medical director.
