What's in the Box
The HeartStart FRx (model 861304) is the Philips AED for places that are hard on equipment: athletic fields, warehouses, job sites, golf courses and response vehicles. It is semi-automatic. Once the pads are on, it reads the heart rhythm and, only when a shock is advised, lights the orange Shock button for the rescuer to press. Philips designs it for responders with basic CPR and AED training, but the voice prompts talk anyone through each step. Its honest limits: it keeps the CPR beat and gives spoken cues but does not measure the compressions, it has no Wi-Fi or cellular reporting, and in the US it is sold only by prescription.
Philips HeartStart FRx AED - Features
Product Features
Who It Suits
Teams that carry the AED to the patient: coaches, security officers, lifeguards, maintenance crews, police and plant first-aid teams. Philips writes the FRx for people with basic life support training, so it suits a site where a trained team responds. If the AED will hang on an office wall for whoever is nearest, the OnSite (compared below) does the same core job.
Shock Decisions and CPR Coaching
SMART Analysis reads the rhythm through the pads; if it is not shockable, the Shock button does nothing. Adults get 150J, typically 8 seconds after the last compression (Philips calls this Quick Shock). During CPR it keeps a metronome beat and says how fast and how deep to push, but no sensor checks the compressions. The HeartSine 450P adds rate feedback.
Children Under 8
Insert the Infant/Child Key and the FRx lowers the shock to 50J and switches its voice and CPR instructions for a child under 8 years old or under 55 lb (25 kg). It uses the same SMART Pads II, so there is no second pads set to stock or check. The key is sold separately. If you are unsure of the child's age or weight, Philips says to use the FRx without the key.
Battery, Pads and Upkeep
One 9-volt lithium battery, the same one the OnSite takes, gives at least 200 shocks or 4 hours of use when new and typically lasts 4 years once installed. SMART Pads II carry a use-by date at least 2 years from manufacture. Over 8 years, plan on three to four replacement pads sets and one replacement battery, plus fresh pads after any use.
Daily Self-Tests, No Wi-Fi
The FRx runs its own checks daily, weekly and monthly: circuits, the shock path, the battery and the pads, including whether the pad gel has dried out. A blinking green Ready light means it is good to go; a chirp means it needs attention. Nothing reaches a phone or a dashboard, so give someone a monthly look on the calendar and use the date sticker that comes with it.
Where It Fits and Where It Does Not
Philips seals the FRx to IP55 (dust-protected and waterjet-proof), drop-tests it from 4 ft onto masonry and rates it for a 1,100 lb (500 kg) crush load. It weighs 3.5 lb with battery and pads and measures 7.1 in tall, 8.8 in wide and 2.4 in deep. Standby and use are rated from 32°F to 122°F, so a car in summer sun or a shed in a northern winter needs a temperature-controlled cabinet or an indoor home. It resists water jets but is not made to go under water.
FRx or OnSite
Both are semi-automatic Philips AEDs with 150J adult shocks and the same battery. The HeartStart OnSite weighs 3.3 lb, is only drip-proof (IP21), is rated for standby from 50°F to 109°F and uses a separate child pads cartridge. The FRx costs more and adds the IP55 seal, the wider temperature range, the 4 ft drop rating and one pads set for adults and children. For an AED that stays inside a climate-controlled building, the OnSite is usually the better buy.
Prescription, Training and Records
In the US the FRx requires a prescription; contact us about it before you order. Register the AED with your local EMS so dispatchers know where it is. Philips Training Pads II switch the FRx itself into a training mode with eight practice scenarios. After a use, it holds the first 15 minutes of ECG and every event and shock decision, which can be sent by infrared to a PC running Philips data software for your medical director.
