What's in the Box

The HeartStart OnSite (model M5066A, part of the Philips HS1 family) suits an AED that hangs in one indoor spot: an office, a school, a church, a gym or a front desk. It is semi-automatic. Once the pads are on, it reads the heart rhythm and, only if a shock is advised, tells the rescuer to press the flashing orange Shock button. The voice prompts cover every step from pulling the green handle to CPR, and they wait for the rescuer instead of running ahead. Its honest limits: it keeps time for CPR with a metronome but does not measure the compressions, and it is made for indoor use, not rain, dust or a hot car.

Philips HeartStart OnSite AED - Features

Product Features

Who It Suits

Sites where the AED lives in a wall cabinet and the person who grabs it has likely never used one. The pads cartridge handle is green, the buttons are labeled and the AED talks through each step, so someone with little or no training can follow along. Training still helps: the HS1 trainer lets staff practice the same steps without a live device.

Shock Decisions and CPR Coaching

SMART Analysis reads the rhythm through the pads, and when it finds no shockable rhythm, pressing the Shock button does nothing. Adults get 150J. During CPR, the blue i-button gives spoken coaching and a metronome beat. There is no sensor for compression depth or rate; the HeartSine 450P adds rate feedback if your responders want it.

Children Under 8

With the Infant/Child SMART Pads cartridge clicked in, the OnSite lowers the shock to 50J and switches its CPR coaching for a child under 8 years old or under 55 lb (25 kg). The child cartridge is sold separately and is prescription-only, so schools, day cares and family sites should plan for one and keep it next to the AED. Like the adult cartridge, it is single-use.

Battery, Pads and Upkeep

One 9-volt lithium battery gives at least 200 shocks or 4 hours of use and about 4 years in standby. The Adult SMART Pads cartridge has a use-by date at least 2 years from manufacture. Over the 8-year AED warranty, plan on three to four replacement adult cartridges and one replacement battery, plus a fresh cartridge after any use.

Daily Self-Tests, No Wi-Fi

Every day the OnSite checks its circuits, shock delivery, battery and pads cartridge, including whether the pad gel is still moist. A blinking green light means ready; a chirp means it needs attention. It has no Wi-Fi or cellular reporting, so the light only helps if someone looks at it. Put a monthly look on a calendar and fill in the date tags that come in the box.

Where It Fits and Where It Does Not

At 3.3 lb with battery and pads, it is easy to carry up stairs or across a campus, and it withstands a 1 meter drop. It is only drip-proof (IP21), and Philips rates it for standby between 50°F and 109°F, so a vehicle, an unheated cabinet or a dusty plant floor is the wrong home. For wet, dusty or rough sites, the Philips FRx is the sibling built for that. It is rated for standby between 32°F and 122°F, so in a vehicle or an outdoor spot that gets colder or hotter than that, it still needs a temperature-controlled cabinet.

OnSite, Home or FRx

The HeartStart Home is built on the same HS1 design and is sold for use at home. The OnSite is the version for businesses and organizations. Philips sells both over the counter in the US, so neither AED needs a prescription. The FRx costs more, is sealed to IP55 and uses SMART Pads II for adults and, with the Infant/Child Key, for children.

Records After a Rescue

The OnSite stores the first 15 minutes of ECG along with each event and shock decision from a use. The record can be sent by infrared to a computer with the matching Philips software, which a medical director or the local EMS may ask to see after a rescue. A new adult cartridge goes in before the AED goes back on the wall.
